US soccer team braces for anti-Trump backlash at game in Mexico City
- U.S. national soccer team members know they'll face a hostile crowd when they play Mexico in Mexico City Sunday night.
It would be tough enough playing the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the high-altitude Azteca Stadium, in front of around 100,000 fans. That job will be made more difficult by the fact many of those fans will see the U.S. team as a proxy for President Donald Trump. The controversial politician launched his presidential campaign with a speech targeting Mexican immigrants to the U.S. (“When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. … They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.”) And he's vowed to build a wall between the two nations.
