Mark Pocan claim: Betsy DeVos backs groups that say LGBT students must get 'conversion therapy' - U.S. Rep. Mark Pocan, a Madison-area Democrat who has called for prohibiting the use of such therapy on minors, attacked Betsy DeVos in a letter on Jan. 11, 2017, six days before her Senate confirmation hearing. The letter, signed by Pocan and the other four co-chairs of the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus, was sent to the leaders of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, which is scheduled to vote on DeVos’ nomination on Jan. 31, 2017. Trump Could Bring Enemies in South America Closer Together

Trump Could Bring Enemies in South America Closer Together - Trump, who assumed power last week, has pledged to reverse the Cuba policy of his predecessor “unless the Castro regime meets our demands”. Rex Tillerson, Trump’s secretary of state and the former boss of ExxonMobil, has an acrimonious history when it comes to Venezuela. Nicolás Maduro, the Venezuelan president, has said Trump — a fellow illiberal strongman — can be no worse than Barack Obama. But that’s probably not how the Cubans see it.

No country for machos: What is there about machismo in Brazil and Latin America?

No country for machos: What is there about machismo in Brazil and Latin America ? - In Brazil, the killing of a female due to domestic violence or ‘simple’ gender-based hatred is called feminicide. It was ratified as a law in March, 2015, and tries to protect the 13 women daily murdered every day in Brazil under those circumstances. Those who did not recognise value in the making of this legal device generally assume the use of it as a maneuver from Mrs. Rousseff, who was the president back in those days, or the inutility of a resolution that ‘harms the universality present in the Brazilian Constitution’. These arguments are, for themselves, a reflection of how resistant and traditional public opinion can be - a direct result of our political immaturity.

All of them, however diverse, had one thing in common: they formed part of those governments describing themselves as progressive.
