Big Business Takes Transgender Rights to SCOTUS

Big Business Takes Transgender Rights to SCOTUS - A coalition of 53 companies have signed on to a brief supporting a Virginia high school student who has brought his fight to use the bathroom that corresponds with his gender identity to the Supreme Court. (Bookmark the brief; it's a full-throated defense of transgender rights, and well worth your time.) The companies include Fortune stalwarts Amazon, Apple, IBM, Intel, and Microsoft. The question at hand is whether the Gloucester County School Board in Virginia violated a federal anti-discrimination law two years ago when they prevented Gavin Grimm, now 17 years old, from using the bathroom of his choice. But now, with the addition of corporate heft, the question has broadened considerably. More on that in a moment.

Why Repealing The Affordable Care Act Could Be Devastating For The LGBT Community

Why Repealing The Affordable Care Act Could Be Devastating For The LGBT Community - Even as Congressional Republicans intensify their attempts to repeal (and, apparently, replace) it, the Affordable Care Act is more popular than ever. According to a survey from the Kasier Family Foundation, 48 percent of Americans view the ACA favorite, hardly a resounding endorsement but a noticeable increase from 43 percent just a few months earlier in December 2016. Moreover, a  study in the New England Journal of Medicine estimated that 43,000 Americans could die annually if the Affordable Care Act is repealed. While an ACA repeal would likely have dire consequences for the health of people across the country, one of the groups that is likely to be hit hardest is the LGBT community.

The key to women's equality in Latin America

The key to women's equality in Latin America - The goal of sustainable development with gender equality, which is born of the synergy between the Regional Gender Agenda and the 2030 Agenda, compels us to set our sights and focus our actions on the structural knots of inequality in our societies. First, we think about socio-economic inequality and poverty and about the necessary transformation of the reigning development model toward one that incorporates new patterns of sustainable production and consumption and of the redistribution of wealth, income and time.

Why Mixed-Race Americans Will Not Save The Country

Why Mixed-Race Americans Will Not Save The Country -  But this illusion is incompatible with an America in which the presidential election was won by the candidate who ran a "Make America Great Again" campaign, which many critics have pointed out was widely heard as a call to "Make America White Again." If the election results are a vindication for those championing the politics of President Trump, the demographic trends point in the opposite direction. Today, the United States' mixed-race population is growing three times faster than the general population, and optimism about the impact that mixed-race people can have on a racially-divided country abounds.
